Shooting at Howe Park Results in 4 Shot in the Arden-Arcade Area of Sacramento

Officials in Sacramento County are examining a gunfire incident that occurred Saturday night April 18 at Howe Community Park while deputies were breaking up an unlawful assembly of hundreds of attendees.

Background

Law enforcement initially got calls about the Arden-Arcade park at about 6:30 in the evening after learning of individuals possibly carrying concealed weapons. After that, a second caller reported about a reported physical confrontation unfolding near the park.

Aerial units was sent to survey the area but came back with no confirmation of a fight. However, it was evident that a massive group had congregated at Howe Park without any permit or approval.

How the Shooting Unfolded

Deputies began the process of clearing the park by setting up around the park's perimeter and broadcasting over loudspeakers ordering the assembled crowd to leave immediately. Approximately 15 minutes were provided for people to comply.

Just as the crowd began to move that 20 to 25 rounds of ammunition were fired. The sudden gunfire sent hundreds fleeing. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies immediately began looking for those injured.

Four Victims Hospitalized

By the time the scene was secured, four people were confirmed as gunshot victims. The victims — consisting of one woman and three men each apparently in their 20s — were taken to area medical facilities. Medical teams indicated that two were treated for serious injuries, one had moderate injuries, and one had injuries classified as minor. In a positive development, all four victims survived and were stable.

Metro Fire Sacramento also responded and helped care for those who had been shot at the park.

The Investigation

Most of the gunfire was believed to have unfolded along Cottage Way close to the Home Depot store situated at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Law enforcement investigators located more spent casings throughout the Cottage Way area. Round impacts were also found in the metal fencing bordering the Home Depot. These discoveries showed that a shooter had been aiming south from along Cottage Way targeting the Home Depot store. The Home Depot was secured under a brief lockdown while the scene was active. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives remained on scene late into the evening.

Detainees in Solano County

Information relayed through scanner monitoring confirmed that a suspect Kia had been detained in nearby Solano County. Four suspects were taken into custody. Deputies were en route to collect those detained to bring the suspects back for further questioning. Footage analyzed by investigators established that the shooting involved two separate here gunmen.
